Why the real heat stress for cats is not the 35-degree day, but the warm days in between. And why you almost never notice it.

It affects a small percentage of cats every summer.

What the others go through has hardly a name among cat owners. In veterinary medicine, it does. It's called chronic heat stress: the creeping, daily effort with which the cat's body works for weeks and months against heat that doesn't seem like an obvious emergency.

It is the reason why cats in a reality where Belgian summers are getting longer and hotter every year, age faster. Why problems with kidneys, heart, and circulation increase in older cats. Why the phrase "That's normal with age" is increasingly heard in Belgian veterinary practices.

It is not normal.

It is the sum of one hundred and fifty warm days when no one was afraid and no one saw anything.

The math no one does

This is the number that almost no cat owner knows: 20 to 26 degrees Celsius. That is a cat's comfort zone. The temperature at which its body is in balance, without having to use energy to cool itself. Above that, the effort begins. From about 30 degrees Celsius indoors, it becomes critical for many cats.

Look at the weather forecast for the coming week. How many days are above 26 degrees Celsius? In most Belgian cities, that's regularly several days in the summer. And indoors it's often warmer than outside, especially in attic rooms.

The KNMI documents the shift in black and white: the number of heat days per summer has more than doubled since the 1960s. But those are only the peaks, the days above 30 degrees Celsius. The real burden comes from the warm days when no one does anything.

That's not "a few hot days in the summer". That's half of the warm part of the year.

On each of those days, the cat's body works against the heat. Its circulatory system operates under higher stress. Its kidneys filter more, and the kidney is precisely the cat's most sensitive organ. This accumulates, week after week, summer after summer. Acute heatstroke is what cat owners fear. Chronic heat stress is what actually shortens cats' lifespans, without anyone seeing it coming.

Why conventional measures are not enough

Most owners already do a lot. Shutters down. A fan. An occasional wet towel. Fresh water in multiple places. When it gets really hot, they worry.

That's all correct. It's even good.

But it only kicks in at 32 degrees.

At 26 degrees, no one does anything. Not the owner, not the neighbor, not the vet. But at 26 degrees, the cat is already outside her comfort zone. Her body has already started to work against it. And because she doesn't show it, it goes unnoticed.

Then there's the second part of the problem: cats sleep and rest sixteen hours a day or more. On the couch. In the cat bed. On the blanket by the windowsill. All those surfaces store heat. No surface dissipates that heat.

The cat tries all day to release its body heat to a surface that gives that heat back.

Cats don't sweat. They cool down through the floor

A cat has almost no sweat glands, only small glands under its paw pads. It cannot dissipate heat through its fur. Panting, which is a dog's emergency brake, is an alarm signal in cats, a sign of severe overheating. Before it comes to that, the cat has only one effective way to dissipate heat: a cool surface on which it can lie. Belly, inner thighs, and paw pads release heat directly to the underlying surface, precisely where the fur is thin. That is its real air conditioning.

That is why a cat in the summer seeks out the tiles in the bathroom, the sink, the empty bath, the stone floor in the hallway.

If she disappears from the warm living room and you later find her stretched out on the kitchen tiles, it's not a whim. It's an ancient program trying to find what we, through our modern, soft, well-heated homes, have removed from her life: a cool floor.

The simple question is: how do you give that back?

Bij ons wel. Ik heb hem gewoon op zijn favoriete plek gelegd en hem niet gedwongen. Na een paar dagen lag hij er vanzelf op. En als je kat de mat helemaal niet accepteert, kun je hem terugsturen.

Onze kater is 13 en een echte binnenkat. In de zomer lag hij alleen nog maar op de badkamertegels en was hij nauwelijks te zien. Sinds 3 weken hebben we de mat, en nu ligt hij weer bij ons in de woonkamer erop. De eerste zomer waarin ik niet het gevoel heb dat ik hem hier alleen mee laat.

DIT artikel had ik vorige zomer nodig gehad. We hebben wekenlang met een ventilator en een natte handdoek zitten proberen. En de hele tijd had ik het gevoel dat ze stilletjes leed en dat ik het niet zag. Precies die machteloosheid. Als we dit eerder hadden geweten, waren ons twee zomers bespaard gebleven..

Ik heb meteen twee besteld, één voor mijn moeder. Haar Perzische kat heeft hetzelfde probleem en krijgt door haar korte neus in de zomer sowieso moeilijker lucht. Eindelijk iets dat na één zomer niet gaat lekken zoals al die Amazon-rommel.
